Decking & Pergola Sydney, Built as One Connected Structure

A deck and pergola built together, rather than added on at different times, means the framing, drainage, and roofline all work with each other from the start. Prestige Roofing Solutions designs and builds custom decking and pergola combinations across Sydney, tied into your home's existing roof rather than sitting apart from it. Based in Blacktown.

Why Deck and Pergola Together

Building both at once means the pergola’s structural posts and the deck’s footings get planned as one job, not two separate projects that have to work around each other after the fact.

It also means the whole outdoor space gets designed together, where the shade falls, how the deck’s laid out underneath it, rather than a deck built first and a pergola squeezed on top of it later. If you only want one or the other, that’s fine too, we cover pergolas paired with carports separately, and can build a deck on its own without a pergola over it.

What Our Decking & Pergola Service Includes

ROOF 5

Composite Decking vs Composite Decking

ROOF

Timber

Timber decking, hardwood species suited to outdoor use, gives the classic look most people picture and can be finished to match different aesthetic styles. It needs periodic oiling or sealing to hold up over time.

Composite Decking

Composite decking costs more upfront but needs far less ongoing maintenance, no oiling, better resistance to Sydney’s UV exposure and weather swings over the years. Worth weighing upfront cost against how much time you actually want to spend maintaining it down the track.

Open-Batten, Polycarbonate, or Solid Roofing for the Pergola

Open-batten gives partial shade and lets light through, a look rather than full weather protection, works well over a deck where you want the outdoor feel preserved. Polycarbonate sheeting lets light through while still shedding rain, a middle option between full shade and open air. Solid roofing, usually Colorbond matched to your house, gives full weather protection and works if the space needs to function as genuinely usable outdoor living space regardless of weather.

Things to Weigh Up Before You Build

3

How You'll Actually Use the Space

A deck and pergola built for entertaining looks different from one built as a quiet, shaded reading spot. Worth talking through before the design's locked in, not after it's built.

4

Sun Direction

North or west-facing decks get more afternoon sun, which affects both how much shade the pergola needs to provide and what decking material handles that exposure best.

2

Budget

Cost depends on size, framing material, steel versus timber posts, and decking choice. We'll walk through this properly during design consultation rather than quoting a rough figure that doesn't reflect your actual yard.

7

Council Approval

Depends on size and whether the structure's enclosed. Smaller, open builds can often be exempt development in NSW, larger or enclosed ones usually need council sign-off. We'll flag this specifically for your build rather than assuming either way.

5

Council Approval

In NSW, a like-for-like roof replacement, same footprint, same pitch, similar material, is usually treated as exempt or complying development and doesn’t need a full development application. Changing the roof’s profile, raising its height, or switching to a materially different roofing type can trigger council approval requirements. It’s worth checking with your local council, or asking your roofer to flag it, before work starts, since the rules vary a bit between council areas.

6

Repair or Replace? How to Decide

The short version: if the damage is localised, a handful of tiles, one section of flashing, a single leak, repair usually makes sense. If the problems are spread across the whole roof, keep recurring after previous repairs, or the roof is old enough that patching one area just means the next failure is somewhere else, replacement is the better long-term call. A roofer who’s actually looked at your roof can give you a straight answer either way, rather than a guess based on age alone.

Timing and Storm Season

Sydney’s storm season generally runs from around November through to March, and that’s when hail and heavy rain do the most damage to ageing roofs. If your roof is already borderline, getting it replaced before storm season starts is usually smarter than waiting to see what a bad storm does to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to help you make the right decision for your home.

Together, and honestly that’s usually the better way to do it. One frame, one set of footings, rather than two projects that end up working around each other.

Depends what you want to deal with later. Timber looks great but needs oiling every so often. Composite costs more up front and you basically don’t touch it again for years.

Depends on size and whether it’s enclosed. Smaller open ones are often fine without it. Anything bigger or closed in usually needs sign-off, we’ll check for your specific block rather than guess.

Yeah, that’s the usual ask actually, same Colorbond colour and profile so it doesn’t look tacked on.

The build itself moves pretty fast. If council’s involved, that part usually takes longer than the actual construction.

Blacktown-based. We get out to Hills Shire, French Forest, Inner West, North Sydney, Penrith, Wentworth Falls, Sutherland Shire, Liverpool, Richmond, Windsor.
